Best Time to Start Content Marketing? Last Year. Second Best Time? Now.
There's always a chance to begin marketing in earnest and catch up with the competition. But why wait? Start walking - and writing - now.
Everywhere is walking distance if you have enough time.
And, since yesterday’s gone like the wind, there’s never a perfect time to start anything other than “now.”
There’s a constant push in most marketing to create urgency and sense of FOMO, to speed things up to push someone from “maybe” to “I’ll buy that.”
And that can lead to a sense of feeling like it’ll be impossible to ever catch up or keep up unless you buy whatever is being pitched now.
Regarding content marketing and social media, this non-stop urgency from everyone from marketing agencies to the various hustlebros (and sisses) can cause folks to throw up their hands in despair — or rush to buy something they don’t need (or don’t need yet).
Or they get caught up in a weird decision loop of feeling like they should’ve started already and that they won’t be able to catch up to the businesses in front of them so they sit paralyzed.
Don’t.
Look, you do need to start.
Or you won’t ever catch up — and then get ahead.
You have to start stepping out.
But whether you start today, tomorrow, or next week; you can eventually achieve your goals.
But for my opening line to be true, you have to start walking.
Then you have to keep walking.
With content marketing, once you start, you can’t stop.
Well, you can — and too many people and businesses do:
They’ll start, see some success with leads and sales, and then taper off thinking they’ve “done content marketing.”
Or they’ll start, never quite get the results as quickly as desired, then stop before they have a chance to succeed.
Or they’ll grow, but only in fits and starts, as they start/stop campaigns, never quite gaining the traction that a slow, steady grind develops over time.
If you’re thinking about content marketing — from a newsletter to a full-on content strategy — start now.
Today.
Take that first step.
Then another.
Hell, soon, you might even be running — and running laps around the folks “ahead” of you now.
And while there are few guarantees in life, here’s one: you aren’t going anywhere without taking that first step.
Oh, yeah, this also applies to genAI. No, no one has an uncatchable lead on you because they’ve already started. In fact, no one ever has an uncatchable lead just because they’re using the hottest and fadiest fad du jour. But this is a post for another day!
The lowest-hanging fruit for most businesses is to start with a newsletter to existing companies and grow from there. I can help. Take a look at my newsletter-in-a-box service and then let’s talk (duhonius@gmail.com).
